University Lecturer Enhances Student Collaboration through Deep Learning in Education
In an innovative effort to address the growing challenges in student collaboration, Adhitya Amarulloh, a lecturer at the Department of Educational Technology at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), has developed and implemented a new approach aimed at enhancing collaboration skills among students in the Ilmu Pendidikan (Education Science) course. The approach integrates Deep Learning methodologies to create a more interactive, engaging, and impactful learning experience.
The issue, identified through several observations, revolves around the lack of active collaboration among students in traditional teaching methods. Adhitya's initiative seeks to address this by applying Deep Learning techniques, which emphasize deep understanding, active participation, and real-world application of knowledge—key components necessary for the 21st-century education landscape. "Deep Learning is not just about memorizing facts but about understanding concepts at a deeper level, engaging with peers, and thinking critically about real-world problems," said Adhitya. "This shift in how we teach aligns with the evolving needs of higher education, particularly in fostering critical thinking and collaboration among students."
The Active Deep Learner Experience (ADLX) model has been proven effective in enhancing student collaboration, especially for students facing social behavioral challenges. According to research by Andrews et al. (2020) and Bevan et al. (2014), this model helps students engage with their peers in meaningful discussions and collaborative problem-solving activities, improving their teamwork and communication skills. Adhitya's approach is closely aligned with UNESA's vision of producing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also skilled in working together and solving complex problems.
To measure the effectiveness of this initiative, both qualitative and quantitative assessments were conducted. Students were asked to provide feedback on their perceptions of how Deep Learning influenced their collaborative skills, while their progress was also tracked through pre-and post-test evaluations, group performance assessments, and surveys. The findings are promising. Students reported a higher level of satisfaction with the collaborative learning environment, noting that the integration of peer feedback, group discussions, and problem-based learning helped them understand the course material more deeply. These activities provided opportunities for students to engage actively with the content and their peers, fostering an environment of mutual learning and reflection.
"This initiative has not only improved our ability to collaborate but also made us more confident in expressing our ideas and critically analyzing the material," said one of the participating students. Adhitya's innovation is a step forward in addressing the gap between traditional teaching methods and the demands of modern education. By leveraging collaborative learning models and Deep Learning, he is preparing students at UNESA for success in an increasingly interconnected and dynamic world.
Through this program, UNESA continues its commitment to enhancing the quality of education and developing graduates who are equipped with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills needed to thrive in today’s professional landscape. This initiative exemplifies how higher education institutions can use innovative teaching strategies to meet the demands of the 21st century while staying aligned with their core educational missions. As a result, this new learning approach is setting the stage for an educational revolution at UNESA, one that will better prepare students for the challenges of the future.
